Perfect recommendation, Richard! His Dark Materials is one of my most beloved favorites, and I have probably read all three well over a hundred times, without tire. Though, I must complain: While I understand the necessity of the ending of the series, it thoroughly chafed my mood the first time I read it, and still continues to do so even until this day!
